Perry was born in Chicago to actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as shown in flashback) Her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's first TV roles. The parents of her were not keen to let her pursue acting until she became older and worried about the consequences of stress. Perry said that she was too shy to act at the age of 16, but she began doing shows in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer from Boston University. Following her graduation, Perry went into New York to search for jobs on television, landing small parts on series such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent but homesickness brought the actress back to California where she found acting jobs. In 2013 she performed in The Other Place on Broadway with her mother. She performed with her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 on The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry played nine roles in the ABC thriller The Family, in 2016. She had a regular role in the ABC political drama Scandal which starred her father. The actress also portrayed the younger Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon, a CBS spin-off of The Big Bang Theory. She was cast in the role in an audition that was open despite being connected to the persona.
